SENCOS: The National Award for SEN Coordination - Devon LA in partnership with the South West Consortium

The National Award for SEN Coordination is a DfE approved post-graduate qualification for teachers in the role of SENCO. The Education (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators) (England) (amendment) Regulations 2009 (2009 No. 1387) set out the requirement for new-to-role SENCOs in maintained mainstream schools to obtain this qualification. The SEND (0-25) Code of Practice reiterates these requirements. They have three years from date of appointment to obtain the Award.

There is no further government funding for this course; all CPD funding is now devolved to schools. The fees for the SW Consortium NASENCO for 2020-2021 are £2,500.

To be able to undertake the course you need:
• To have QTS or QTLS, be a qualified teacher (i.e. successfully completed NQT induction period) and preferably be a SENCO
• To have access to children/young people with SEN
• To be able to lead (at least some) aspects of SEN in the school/college/educational setting
• To have the support of the headteacher or equivalent (or Chair of Governors or equivalent if you are the head)

We also ask the headteacher or equivalent to complete a memorandum of agreement which indicates the school/college’s support for the SENCO in terms of funding (where relevant), attendance on the course, and access to relevant information in school/college and to name an in-school supporter to provide general support for you on the course.

To gain the Award with the South West Consortium (Exeter or Plymouth Universities), you must pass two modules via assignments and meet the SENCO Learning Outcomes. The course takes place over an academic year, commencing in September 2020 – it includes an induction afternoon, six taught days and four strongly recommended study days. I am sure you will be aware there is no longer any specific dedicated government funding for this course.
The fees for 2020-21 are £2,500. This does not include any supply cover.

Please note that this course requires DUAL registration with the University of Plymouth. You must ensure you are registered on Babcock LDP shop site and with the University of Plymouth in order to secure a place on this award. Full details on how to complete registration and enrolment will be given upon your being offered a place on the course.
